Australia first established diplomatic relations with Albania in 1985 when the isolationist communist regime established by Enver Hoxa following WWII was still in power. Non-resident accreditation to Albania is held by the Australian Ambassador in Athens while the Albanian Ambassador to China, resident in Beijing, is accredited to Australia. Albania is represented in Australia by an Honorary Consulate-General in Adelaide.

The 2001 Census recorded 1,460 Albania-born persons in Australia, with the largest community residing in Victoria (851). However, 70,527 people are recorded as speaking Albanian at home, also predominantly in Victoria (50,682).

Trade between Australia and Albania is small. In 2003-2004 Australian exports to Albania were valued at $0.56 million and consisted mainly of meat, butter and pharmaceutical products. Imports from Albania for the same period were valued at $4.8 million and consisted mainly of computer equipment.

It is believed that Naum Konxha was the first Albanian to arrive in Australia. In 1885, after a military career, he and his wife visited her relatives in Brisbane and decided to remain.

In the 1920s approximately 1,000 Albanian speaking migrants came to Australia. Mostly men and accustomed to rural life, the Albanians worked in the farming and sugar industries in Queensland and the market garden area of Fremantle in Western Australia. Albanians shared a reputation with Italian migrants for being reliable, hard workers.

During the 1930s approximately 400 Albanian speakers settled in Brisbane and Cairns in Queensland, Melbourne and Shepparton in Victoria and York in Western Australia. Again they worked in the farming industry as they had in their homeland

The Albanian community in Shepparton is the oldest Muslim community in country Victoria. With a Mosque established in 1960, the community still observes religious days and the Albanian national day. Some of the Albanian community of the Goulburn area are fourth generation Australians

Informata rreth komunitetit Translate to English

Mė 1944 regjimi i ri erdhi nė Shqipėri. Kjo, sė bashku me fundin e Luftės sė Dytė Botėrore, zvogloi numėrin e emigrantėve shqiptarė tė ardhur nė Australi.
Sipas "The Australian People", tė edituar nga James Jupp, rreth 400 shqiptarė u vendosėn nė Australi gjatė periudhės sė pasluftės.

Shumica e tyre u vendosėn nė Melbourne, Shepparton dhe disa nė Perth.
Komuniteti Shqiptarė nė Shepparton ėshtė komuniteti mė i vjetėr mysliman nė rrethet e Victorisė. Me xhami tė ndėrtuar nė vitin 1960, komuniteti ende i mbanė festat religjioze dhe Ditėn Kombėtare Shqiptare-28 Nėntori.
Disa anėtarė tė Komunitetit Shqipatrė nga rrethi i Goulburn-it janė gjenerata e katėrt australiane.

Mė 1999, Australia ofroi pėrkohėsishtė vendstrehim tė sigurtė 4,000 refugjatėve nga Kosova.

Sipas shėnimeve zyrtare tė regjistrimit tė popullėsis, Komuniteti Shqiptarė nė Australi numėron mė shumė se 60,000 Shqiptaro-Australinė.
