1. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE PALESTINIANS

I just do not understand those Palestinians. Why do they complain so much,
when they know their lands were taken over by the only Democracy in the
Middle East? They should be thanking their lucky stars that what they claim
is "robbery" has been done by some of the kindest armed settlers in the
world!

And why aren't the Palestinians happy living together like one big family
in tiny Gaza, surrounded by the protecting siege forces of Israel from
land, sea and air? What's a little overcrowding and deprivation -- can't
they just toughen up a bit? And if it's as overcrowded as they claim, why
do their leaders insist on the right of return for compatriots scattered
all over the world? It doesn't make sense!

Can't those Palestinians understand that every time armed invaders
establish themselves on native land, it has to be held through force?
Surely they can't expect the descendants of European Jews who came to
settle "empty" Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s to be any different.

And it seems so unreasonable that the Palestinians should envy their
uninvited Jewish "neighbors" in the Occupied West Bank, with their paved
roads, beautiful parks, fine houses, swimming pools, community centres,
schools and health clinics.

Maybe they should form Palestinian Welcome Wagon clubs instead, to send
flowers, falafel, pita and hummus to settlers arriving from Canada and the
U.S. to enjoy in their new homes in the Occupied West Bank.

No, I just do not understand those Palestinians. Why do their leaders
lament that the people are losing hope for the future? Is 70% unemployment
so bad? If the Israelis bomb their power generating station, they'll only
miss their favorite TV shows and air conditioners.

The Palestinians are too impatient anyway. Israelis have occupied their
native lands in Gaza and the West Bank for only 29 years -- not 200! And
didn't Israel dismantle some Jewish settlements in Gaza only last year?

Why must Palestinians be so greedy? All they do is talk, talk, talk, about
ridiculous issues like peace with justice, or an independent state of their
own. Shouldn't they be more considerate and leave all that empty West Bank
land to the new Jewish settlers without so much fuss?

And don't Palestinians know about the right-wing Christian imperative that
Jews must first be settled in Palestine before Jesus can return? How can
Palestinians, who claim to believe in God, be so selfish as to deny God's
promise of Palestine to the Jews? They don't even teach their children
these facts! Is it perhaps because they want their kids to grow up anti-
Semitic?

They should all be more helpful and move out now, so that this future
historical event can happen. There's plenty of room for them in the U.S.,
or at least in nearby American-occupied countries like Iraq and
Afghanistan. Both Christian and Muslim Palestinians should be able to
understand what a noble sacrifice this would be!

And another thing: What makes Palestinians think, in their wildest dreams,
that forming a government through free and democratic elections is anything
to cheer about? We've seen how imperfect democracy can be. But they still
insist on being copycats to other nations with far more resources and
sophistication. And here is generous Israel, surrounding them on all sides
and more than happy to do all that tiresome governing for them!

So I wonder when (if ever) the Palestinians will wake up and be grateful to
Zionism for all the benefits it has brought -- contact with ambitious white
Europeans, F16 fighter planes, helicopter gun ships, a wide variety of
modern killing machines, and state of the art armed forces. After all, what
has Palestinian culture given to armed Jewish settlers in return? -- Just a
lot of "empty" land and falafel, which became Israel's favorite fast food.
Big deal!

No, I still do not understand those Palestinians.

2. A CRY FOR MY BELOVED COUNTRY

LEBANON -- It is very painful to write to you about a country that is
considered to be one of the most amazing in the world for its natural
beauty and people, and witness it being crippled. I know you are all
worried about us. Our nation is being destroyed, we are at war, and all we
have striven for and built up over the past 15 years is being destroyed in
few days, with yet more to come.

Lebanese are known for their strength and perseverance. We will stand up
again, and we will rebuild our bridges and roads; we will reconstruct our
infrastructure and destroyed neighborhoods. But what about our Martyrs? And
who will provide for those families who lost their homes and possessions? A
massacre has been inflicted on the Lebanese people. Toxic bombs are being
dropped on civilian neighbourhoods; people can't breathe due to the fumes.
This is a massive humanitarian crime. Israel must stop this; they cannot be
allowed to murder an entire nation in the name of their self-defense.

Where is the international community in all of this? Where is the Arab
world? Where is the respect of for human values? Lebanon is paying the
price for conflicts already embedded in this region. We call upon the
Palestinians, the Syrians, the Iranians, all Arabs and Muslims, to stand up
for our nation; Lebanon is fighting for all of you! Stand up for a nation
that is sacrificing its citizens and blood for you!

I am so honoured to be Lebanese, the citizen of a country that is envied by
the world, a country one could once call heaven in the Middle East. No
matter how hard you try to destroy this country and its people, you won't
succeed. We breathe oxygen from the great cedars and revive with every
martyr's blood shed.

But where are the Security Council and the United Nations? International
law and humanitarian conventions are being violated; the Lebanese are being
massacred. The two Israeli soldiers detained are prisoners of war and
Lebanon is in a state of war with Israel. Murdering and attacking innocent
civilians is a violation of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949, and
the Hague Regulations of 1907. Article 3 of the Geneva Convention for the
Protection of Civilians at War prohibits, violence, killing, mutilating,
torturing and otherwise cruel activities against those who are not actively
involved in military operations. And article 49 of the same Convention
requires the prosecution and trail of those military personnel that ordered
and committed those criminal acts.

Who will hold Israel responsible for its multiple humanitarian violations?
Will the United Nations and international community support us? Do
international conventions and laws apply only to certain indigenous groups?

We Lebanese are demanding our rights and will hold the international
community and the international criminal court responsible for prosecuting
those crimes committed against our citizens.

This is a call to every activist, to all who value human beings for who
they are. We raise our voice to the international community, affirming that
we will not accept injustice. We demand our rights! We are all born equal;
we share same human values. From one human being to another, let us stop
the pain and the suffering.

DÉJÀ VU IN LEBANON

As Israel's ferocious and relentless destruction of Lebanon's
infrastructure continues, veteran Mideast observers are experiencing a
dismaying sense of déjà vu.

In early June 1982, the Reagan Administration in Washington gave Israel's
then defense minister, Ariel Sharon, a green light to invade Lebanon. The
inept U.S. Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, told Sharon he could invade
Lebanon, turn it into an Israeli protectorate, and crush the PLO once he
had a suitable pretext.

The pretext came in the form of retaliation for the attempted assassination
of Israel's ambassador in London by the Abu Nidal group (which had nothing
to do with the PLO). Sharon's real agenda was to crush the PLO and thus any
hopes of a Palestinian state.

Twenty-four years later, the Bush Administration and Israel have provided
the world - and this writer -- a remarkable feeling of déjà vu as Israeli
forces ravage Lebanon and threaten to invade its southern portion. Once
again, a president totally ignorant of Mideast realities, a craven U.S.
Congress and an incompetent secretary of state have created a disaster in
Lebanon.

Americans have never been told by their government-guided media that in a
speech, Osama bin Laden asserted that the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. were
payback for Israel's cruel destruction of Beirut with artillery and bombs,
in which up to 18,000 Lebanese and Palestinian civilians died.

Ironically, we now see what may become a repeat of the 1982 invasion,
regarded by all involved -- including Israel -- as a disaster. With further
irony, we are now watching democratically elected Hamas and Hezbollah
governments battling Israel's democratic government.

According to George Bush, wasn't democracy supposed to solve the Mideast's
problems and end its violence?

In 1975, I arrived in Beirut for the first day of Lebanon's 15-year civil
war. Seven years later, I accompanied Israeli troops as they invaded
Lebanon, and was with an Israeli armored unit in Nabataea when it shot its
way through a procession of Shia worshipers marking Ashura. This notorious
event, and the brutal behavior of Israeli occupation troops, turned Shias
against the Israelis and sparked the birth of Hezbollah.

Trained by Iran and aided by Syria, Hezbollah's tough fighters became the
only Arab military force ever to defeat Israel and shatter its record of
military invincibility. Israel swore revenge. Hezbollah's kidnapping of the
Israeli soldiers provided the pretext for Israel's new, untested government
to unleash a long-planned campaign to destroy Hezbollah and try to draw its
sponsor, Iran, into the confrontation.

Claims by the U.S., Israel, and some Arab states that the abduction of two
Israel soldiers at Shebaa Farms -- land that belongs to Syria but is
occupied by Israel -- was organized by Iran and its ally Syria to divert
attention from Tehran's nuclear program may have some merit. But Hezbollah
is no mere cat's paw of Tehran and often operates independently of its
allies.

Sheik Hussein Nasrallah made clear that Hezbollah's border operation, which
also killed eight other Israeli soldiers, was done for two reasons: first,
to support embattled Palestinians in Gaza who are being ravaged by Israeli
air, land, and sea attacks; second, to secure the release of some of the
hundreds of Hezbollah hostages and 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners
being held by Israel.

So far, Hezbollah is the only Arab force that has taken any concrete action
to help Palestinians suffering devastating collective punishment by Israel.
Now similar punishment is also being inflicted by Israel on Lebanon, a
crime under international law and the Geneva Conventions. Switzerland, the
repository and guardian of the conventions, recently accused Israel of
violating them by its collective punishment of the Palestinian Territories.

Hezbollah made its point by the border operation. Firing hundreds of
inaccurate rockets into northern Israel was military and politically
pointless, as well as a violation of the Geneva Conventions. So, equally,
was the firing of homemade rockets by Palestinian militants into Israel.
Both acts gave Israel a perfect excuse to vent its fury and try to destroy
Hezbollah and Hamas. Killing Israeli civilians only further enflames
Israel. As Talleyrand said, "it was a crime; worse, it was a mistake."

All parties involved are to blame for this frightful mess and carnage:
Palestinians and Hezbollah for provoking Israel at a time when its new
leaders were anxious to show they could blast Arabs as effectively as Ariel
Sharon, and Israel for its brutal repression of Palestinians and the
assassination of their leaders. But most to blame is the Bush
Administration, whose disastrous Mideast policies allowed this crisis to
erupt and then encouraged Israel to bomb Lebanon back to the Stone Age.

The White House has been too obsessed with its lost wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan to pay attention to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Under Bush, U.S.
Mideast policy has fallen into the hands of neoconservatives and
fundamentalist Protestants. Both groups, and President Bush himself, are
closely aligned to Israel's expansionist right wing, leaving would-be
peacemakers on both sides out in the cold.

Little wonder the Muslim world -- and much of Europe - believes Israel
pulls the strings of U.S. foreign policy. This view has become religious
faith among Islamic radicals who see an attack on the U.S. as an attack on
Israel.

Mideast crises tend to follow a similar pattern. First, a bombing or
assassination triggers a fierce Israeli military response. Everyone
involved screams no negotiations and no deals. After days or even weeks of
destruction, the great powers intervene and force a return to the status
quo ante bellum, often under the fig leaf of the UN. Prisoners are quietly
swapped, ransoms discreetly paid.

After much more killing and destruction, Israel will eventually talk to its
enemies. Prisoners will be exchanged. It's only a question of how many
civilians will have to die before this happens.
