The Albanian-American Community in New York City

Erin Gorman and Stacey Richman

Introduction

Lydig Avenue in the Bronx is home to the most highly populated Albanian community in New York City. According to the NYC Department of City Planning's Publication, "The Newest New Yorkers," 925 Albanians immigrated to New York City between 1990-1994. Of that population, 326 Albanians settled in the Bronx. However between 1995 and 1996, Albanian immigration to NYC increased by 154.9%. This is mainly due to the escalating violence in the region of Kosovo.

After doing research online to find out the names and phone numbers of several Albanian businesses and organizations in the Bronx, and making a number of phone calls, we jumped on the 5 train. Eager to do some explorations of our own, we were mainly concentrated on gaining insight into the Albanian language, the extent to which it is employed by the members of the community, and the services available in Albanian.

Businesses

Though at first glance Lydig Avenue appeared to be rather quiet and residential, a few blocks farther revealed a diverse mix of Albanian pizzerias and bakeries, side by side with kosher Russian butchers, convenience stores and small European markets. Intrigued by this seemingly unlikely mix of shops and businesses, we paused to snap a photo.

Immediately, a petite brunette emerged from her beauty salon demanding (in a playful tone) to know our purpose in photographing her store. Upon discovering our innocent intentions as eager students, this Turkish salon owner disclosed her origins and explained that her minimal knowledge of Albanian stems strictly from the need/desire to communicate with her clientele, almost solely consisting of Albanians. Even after a pleasant exchange this woman refused to be photographed, joking that she didn't want to see her face on the cover of the newspaper.

Encouraged by the kind, lighthearted nature of this woman, we continued on our investigative journey, looking into shop windows for hints of Albanian culture, flipping through papers at newsstands for sign of their writing, and listening to detect the languages being employed by those around us.

Storefronts, as well as overheard conversations, revealed English, Spanish, Arabic and Russian to be the most popular languages of the area, aside from Albanian. Curious to discover whether banking was being made accessible to Albanian speakers, we tried out the nearest ATM machine, only to find that English, and Spanish were the only choices of languages. Fortunately, we learned that most Albanian New Yorkers speak enough English to get by, or are aided by friends/members of the community until they can do so.

Suddenly hungry for lunch, we stepped into a small Albanian restaurant we had found on the Internet. The food at the "Burektorja Dukagjine" was both authentic as well as delicious; an Albanian version of pizza. However, the owner only spoke enough English to communicate that she was Albanian and didn't speak English. She was, however, watching an English news program, seemingly more concentrated on the images of the rubble of the World Trade Center- despair speaks no one language. During our time in the restaurant several other customers came and went, exchanging several words in Albanian while waiting for their take out food.

Medical Services

In an attempt to gain insight into medical services available to Albanian speakers in the community, we went into a medical supply store, whose owner sent us to the Pediatric Group next door. Interestingly, we were informed that while this particular office caters largely to the Albanian community, none of the doctors are themselves Albanians, nor are they speakers of the language. Hospitals in the area, such as Jacobi Medical Center, however, do pride themselves on having Albanian translators available for those uncomfortable with, or unable to, communicate in English. These translators come from a volunteer bank. While the services might not be highly publicized, members of the Albanian community in need of assistance are both aware of such services and able to employ them when the need arises.

With the hour getting late, delighted, but somewhat overwhelmed with the abundance of helpful information we were able to gather, the two of us headed back downtown to sort through our newly found material and divide up useful phone numbers and contacts. We were satisfied with what we had at the moment, but knew there was a long ways to go before we truly had a grasp of the language of the Albanian community on Lydig Avenue in the Bronx. Since neither of us are Albanian, we felt we needed the additional perspective of an Albanian American to tell us what being an Albanian American in the Bronx really means.

Case Study: George Poepai

Through contacts we were fortunate enough to be able to schedule an interview with George Poepai, an Albanian engineer working at the Jewish Home and Hospital in the Bronx, who along with his wife and children lives on Lydig Avenue. George began by explaining to us that due to its phonetic nature, the Albanian language is not at all difficult to speak or write. It is made up of 36 letters, and is apparently pronounced precisely the way it is written. Interestingly, it has been extremely difficult to pinpoint the origins of the Albanian language, as it does not resemble any other language.

George, who grew up in a small village in Greece called Kilmene, and moved to the Bronx with his family when he was a teenager, had little trouble learning English. In fact, he pointed out that many Albanians have some command of the English language as English classes are often offered in Albanian schools. George's wife, however, is far less comfortable communicating in English. Though both George and his wife speak to each other and their children in Albanian, more often than not their kids respond in English, as that is the language they learn in school and use when speaking to friends. However, as a community effort to preserve Albanian, Catholic Churches in the area offer both Albanian language and continuing education classes taught in Albanian.

George remembers the days when it was extremely difficult to find any services in New York City catering to Albanians, however that has taken a huge leap in the past 15-20 years, as the Albanian community here has established agencies to aid their own. This type of service proved greatly effective in treating George's father in law who was suffering from manic depression. Unfortunately, he had made little headway until he was introduced to a doctor at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx, who was able to speak to him in Albanian, making treatment all the more comfortable and effective.

Education

Another area in which language has proved especially important is that of education. The local elementary school in the Albanian community in the Bronx is P.S. 96. This school provides a variety of services for all children who speak another language, as well as some specific services for students who speak Albanian. In general, the ESL services depend upon the student's degree of comprehension on fluency in English. The school district also provides ESL instruction for parents on evenings and weekends.

These specific services for Albanian speaking students, however, are very few, and are somewhat misleading. For example, on the Community School District #11 website (this is the district including P.S. 96) the Office of Second Language Instruction Program section states that there is a newly formed Albanian bilingual class at P.S. 96. This information is not exactly true. When we talked to the teachers at P.S. 96, they said that there was no such Albanian bilingual class. The Albanian speaking students are in the general ESL class with all of the other ESL students. The only new thing this year is that the school hired a teaching assistant who speaks Albanian fluently to assist with the instruction of the Albanian-speaking students. The Albanian students are not in their own separate class, and do not receive bilingual instruction.

There are also several privately run Albanian language schools in the area. The Shkollat Shqiptare school, or in English, the "Albanian School" in the Bronx, teaches Albanian to young children of Albanian immigrants. The Albanian Catholic Church, Our Lady of Shkoder, in Hartsdale, N.Y. provides similar services. The students in both of these schools usually understand Albanian, and can speak it fluently because they learned it from their parents. However, their parents wish them to have a more formal grasp of the language, and the schools provide mainly reading and writing instruction.

Government and Community Services

We found few government services provided in Albanian. The only service that we could find in Albanian was voter assistance. The New York Immigration Hotline provided voting services in Albanian on Primary Day. They answered voting questions and also took comments and complaints. Even the office of the state representative for the area of Pelham Parkway, Jeff Klein, had no information on government services in Albanian. This is somewhat disturbing since the office is on Lydig Ave., which is the heart of the Albanian community. In fact, they had no literature in any language other than English, despite the high LOTE use in the area. On Lydig Ave., we heard and saw evidence for the high use of the following LOTE's: Albanian, Turkish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, and Spanish.

Jeff Klein, did however, provide us with the number and address of the Albanian Assistance Center in the Bronx. The Albanian community relies on this organization to receive help on government and immigration affairs, as well as many other services. This center is registered with INS to provide immigration assistance and translate immigration paperwork. The center also provides many other civic services for the Albanian community. They help Albanian immigrants understands the rights they have in the United States, they assist in filling out Social Security paperwork, and with any other translation services Albanians might need regarding government paperwork.

In addition, the Albanian Assistance Center provides assistance to battered women. Specialists assist these women in understanding their rights regarding domestic violence, and act as interpreters between the women and the police. Workers from the Albanian Assistance center also act as mediators between parents and the school districts when conflicts or misunderstandings arise about students due to language barriers.

The center also is involved in many cultural activities within the Albanian community, such as the Global Ethnic Awareness Programs. These programs attempt to unite the school district with the surrounding community. Middle and high school students who come together to share their different cultures. Students bring in traditional music, food, and dress to share with others students of different cultural backgrounds as well as parents and other community members.

Albanian Publications

There are several newspapers and magazines that are published in Albanian for the Albanian American community. The most popular is a newspaper that is published bi-weekly by the name of Illyria. "Illyria" is the ancient name for Albania, literally meaning freedom. This particular newspaper is published in the Bronx and mainly only sold by subscription. Interestingly, during our trip to Lydig Avenue we saw only one newsstand that carried the paper.

Illyria is divided into two sections: the English section, and the Albanian section. The paper covers the news in Albania, Kosovo, and the surrounding countries. Recent articles also included Albania's statement of support for the U.S. in the campaign against terrorism and Albania's denial of harboring any terrorist cells. Many businesses in the Pelham Parkway section of the Bronx advertise in Illyria, especially restaurants, lawyers, and travel agencies. Other Albanian publications include a paper written only in Albanian about the news in Kosovo, and a Catholic religious magazine called, "Jeta Katolike".

Our experiences with the Albanian American community in New York City has led us to believe that although services to the Albanian community have improved, more improvements are definitely still needed. The Albanian community has managed to make their language an integral part of community life, as reflected in the number of Albanian businesses, schools, and publications. The community, in response has acknowledged the Albanian community in various ways, and many non-Albanians actually learn Albanian. However, this acknowledgement is on a very local and informal level. The Albanian American community could benefit from having more official government involvement in providing services in Albanian and publishing government information in Albanian.

Presidenti Amerikan Wilson, me 1914 me Dekret ligjor, shendrroi ne feste shteterore te dielen e dyte te muajit Maj, ne shenje respekti per te gjitha nenat e kombit Amerikan, dite kjo qe festohet edhe sot e kesaj dite.

Letter From Pelham Parkway
Keith Elliot Greenberg
The Commission for Forgiveness of Blood came to Pelham Parkway with its work cut out for it.

For generations, this tidy middle-class Bronx neighborhood has served as a refuge and beacon for successive waves of immigrants moving up and onward out of crowded city tenements and into the neat red brick two- and three-family houses that line Pelham Parkway’s well-swept streets.

Even today Pelham Parkway retains something of its bucolic pretensions. Horses roam the bridle paths leading past traffic into Pelham Bay Park. Columned minimansions stand graciously before the wide green traffic islands that punctuate Pelham Parkway, the thoroughfare from which the neighborhood takes its name.

Once the showpiece of the “Borough of Beautification,” Pelham Parkway also boasts both one of the world’s largest collections of wild animals (the Bronx Zoo), and of cultivated plants (the 230 acres of azalea, rose, rock, and herbs of the New York Botanical Garden).

Many of the Italians and Jews who enjoyed breathing the relatively open air of Pelham Parkway have long since moved on to even greener pastures. In mid-1990, the Commission for Forgiveness of Blood came to town to address the urgent concerns of the newest and most exotic group of Bronx immigrants: the Albanians.

The Albanians have always been a fighting people, survivors of war, first with the Romans, then the Byzantines, then with successive waves of Slavic warriors from the north. In the fifteenth century, the Turks arrived, ruling for five hundred years until, in 1912, Albania finally declared its independence. Serbia took advantage of the ensuing confusion to grab much of Albania’s eastern territory, which was incorporated into Yugoslavia upon its formation in 1918.

Most Albanians in the Bronx are from Yugoslavia; immigration from Albania proper stopped in the Sixties, when Stalinist dictator Enver Hoxha cut off all escape routes from his nation. When Tito died in 1980, his fragile nation of manifold nationalities began to disintegrate, and Albanian immigration from Yugoslavia into the Bronx surged.

“After each war, the side that doesn’t win comes to America,” says Isuf Hajrizi, manager of Illyria, the twice-weekly Albanian newspaper published in nearby Belmont.

The 15,000 Albanians in Pelham Parkway, mostly members of the clannish Geg tribe, had already faced the common hardships of immigrants mastering a new land, a new language, a new culture; now they gathered to confront a peculiar difficulty of their own. Each new immigrant group brings to New York its own strengths and weaknesses; the Albanians bring close-knit families, a strong sense of honor, a fierce drive for independence—and a penchant for blood feuds.

For generations in Albania, the blood feud had been the principal means of settling family disputes. They still talk in Pelham Parkway about the quiet Albanian fellow from Yugoslavia’s Kosova Province who lived a law-abiding existence for 35 years in the Bronx, then returned home to avenge his father’s death a half-century earlier.

So in the Bronx, Albanian men would quite reasonably arm themselves in case they encountered a rival from the Old Country below the elevated tracks of the #2 train on White Plains Road.

Anton Cetta and his Commission for the Forgiveness of Blood came to the Bronx hoping to end it all. “The time has come for us to all shake hands,” Cetta, a professor at the University of Kosova, told the warring Bronx factions, “because the blood feuds have destroyed the Albanian nation.” What’s more, many feared the Albanian blood feuds might destroy Pelham Parkway, or at least that portion of the neighborhood the Albanians have claimed for their own.

A private people, Albanians maintain an unostentatious presence in the Bronx. There are no discotheques blaring pulsating Albanian rhythms or restaurant signs proclaiming “Albanian-American Cuisine.” Yet according to community organizers, Albanians own about 35 percent of the pizzerias in the Bronx, usually under the names of their former Italian owners, like Nicky’s on Fordham Road and Tony’s on Arthur Avenue.

The greatest Albanian success story, however, has been in real estate. Albanians now own as many as one-third of the privately held buildings in the Bronx. For many Albanians, the first step on the road to owning real estate is taking care of someone else’s building.

After World War II, many Albanians came from Italian refugee camps, and the Bronx soon developed a swarm of Italian-speaking Albanian supers. In the Bronx, the Albanian super is a kind of folk character, renowned for his ability to get the job done, sometimes in unorthodox ways.

As in the pizza business, the newcomers had no intention of remaining the hired help for long. In Pelham Parkway they still tell the story of Peter Mrnaci, an Albanian super who used to kid his Jewish landlord, “One day, I’ll own this building.” Years passed and Peter saved and then, one day, the landlord decided to sell. True to his word, Mrnaci became the landlord, and the landlord, his tenant.

As good landlords, Albanians are also good neighbors, helping to preserve the integrity of their buildings and their community. In a city that makes it difficult for landlords to evict drug dealers and destructive tenants, the Albanians have improvised ways to keep their buildings neat and safe. Some have eliminated the drug problem in their buildings by providing free apartments to undercover cops; others brag that they scare away dealers with fists, bats, and, if necessary, guns.

There are other, less salutary sides to Albanians’ legendary prowess as landlords: When tenants complain about services, some Albanian owners have been known to pretend they don’t speak English. And woe to the tenant who incites an Albanian to a grudge match: When one group of women repeatedly complained about the lack of heat in winter, the owner turned it on in the summer, saying something like: “You want more heat? Now you got it.” But their occasional excesses must be measured against the Albanians’ accomplishment: preserving a safe, orderly middle-class neighborhood.

Why have the Albanians succeeded in the Bronx, where so many have known only failure, poverty, and decay? Like other immigrants, Albanians rely on close-knit family ties. Brothers and sisters frequently live in the same home along with their spouses and children. Everyone works and puts the money into the same bank account. After a couple of years, the family has enough to invest in a property.

Just about every Albanian with parents abroad also sends money home. It costs about $150 a month to support a family of five in Yugoslavia’s ethnically Albanian Kosova Province, and Albanian political organizations there regularly send lists of the neediest to compatriots in the Bronx. Some of the wealthier Bronx real estate owners sustain as many as fifty Kosova families each.

Albanians in the Bronx also benefit from extended clan ties, both ethnic and religious. They are almost all members of the Geg tribe, indigenous to the barely penetrable mountain regions north of the Shkumbin River. (The other major group of Albanians in New York, Tosks, came from the farming regions south of the Shkumbin and gravitated mainly to Manhattan and Queens.)

Most Gegs are either Sunni Muslims or Albanian Catholics; after World War II many received help from Church-run resettlement organizations working out of refugee camps in Italy. The Albanian Catholic Church split from the Vatican at the beginning of this century, when Albanian priests refused either to celebrate the Mass in Latin or to turn in their guns. Our Lady of Shkodra Albanian Roman Catholic Church on Park Avenue in the Bronx still flies the American and Albanian flags, but not the Vatican banner.

When a newcomer arrives from the Old Country, as some 7,500 Albanians have in the last decade, he is put to work as a super or in construction, whether or not he has a green card. The job may be a gift from a more established Albanian, but the newcomer is expected to take it seriously. If he works hard, his benefactors may one day help him acquire a building of his own.

Sali Nezaj is a typical case. He arrived in the Bronx in 1970, moving in with his cousins. While his wife spent nights cleaning offices in Manhattan, he worked in construction and diligently saved his money. In 1984, he made his first big purchase, a 19-family apartment house at Bainbridge Avenue and 198th Street. Today he owns four Bronx buildings and encourages his supers, immigrants from Jordan and Puerto Rico, to follow the same track.

Like other Albanian property owners, Nezaj had a lot of help fixing his places up. Albanians cut costs by doing their own repairs—electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, plaster. On big jobs, other Albanians help out, sometimes free of charge, knowing that one day the owner will return the favor.

And every Albanian, no matter how poor, comes to this country with one other key asset: a rigid code of honor. Albanians succeed in part because they can operate outside the tangled web of city regulations that makes it so difficult to start and sustain small enterprises.

Albanians don’t always need formal contracts or mortgages either, because, as Gregory Lima, an Italian-American who serves as public affairs coordinator of the Albanian Benevolent Association, puts it, “They’d rather die than break their word.” Realtor Rexh Xhakli, 52, has lent Albanians he barely knows up to $80,000 on a handshake—without interest. “You don’t charge a brother interest,” he explains.

Nor do Albanian small businessmen often have to deal with the heavy taxes imposed by organized crime. As far back as the Ottoman Empire, Albanians were notorious for refusing to pay imperial taxes, and today in the Bronx they’d rather give up their business—or worse—than pay tribute to the Cosa Nostra. Mobsters have learned not to shake down Albanian business owners, for fear that thirty years down the road the owner’s son might kill the son of the wise guy to repay the indignity.

“Outsiders look at us as landlords who carry guns,” says Alex Lekutanaj, a 26-year-old real estate manager. “They don’t look at the honor and traditions.”

The Albanians’ sense of honor—and their taste for blood feuds—can both be traced to a tome of etiquette named for a fifteenth-century aristocrat: The Canon of Leke Dukagjini. It is a book that can be found in many Bronx living rooms, along with the black two-headed eagle on the Albanian flag, decanters of plum brandy from the Old Country, and picture of Scanderbeg, a prince who defied the Ottoman Empire. In the children’s rooms, next to Barbie dolls, sit likenesses of Nora, the fifteenth-century Albanian girl who assassinated a Turkish sultan.

It is in the Canon that the peculiar mix of honor and ferocity that make up the Albanian character is most starkly on display: “Upon entering the house, the guest must give you his weapon to hold,” one section stipulates. “Holding the weapon is: A) a sign of valor and honor, as well as an indication of your pleasure that a guest has come to you; B) a sign of guardianship, since after you have said, ’Welcome,’ he must have no fear and know that you are ready to defend him against any danger.”

“If I give you my word that I am going to protect you, nothing in the world can stop me,” notes Gjovalin Nikci, 27, the first Albanian printer in the Bronx.

When blood feuds erupt, Albanians insist, it is never a case of violence for the sake of violence. It’s always over honor. But Isuf Hajrizi acknowledges that “Albanians have fought for really stupid things,” citing land and women as the two main causes. Among other acceptable provocations for blood feuds outlined in the code: violating the hospitality of a host by insulting his friend or worker, robbery, failing to repay a debt or obligation, and removing the cover of a cooking pot on your host’s hearth.

Once an Albanian is killed, the feud can quickly escalate: Male family members are responsible for preserving the honor of the deceased—even if it takes generations to obtain revenge. But there are limits, even in blood feuds. The Canon stipulates, “If two groups are fighting and one hundred men have been killed on one side and not a single one on the other, the rifles must be put aside and the firing must stop if someone interposes himself between the two groups.” In some parts of Montenegro, village elders establish a cut-off point: After a certain number of people are killed, the blood feud is officially terminated. “In my village, it was 21,” Nikci remembers.

What if the combatants refuse to end the feud? The Canon has an answer for that as well: “If the firing and abusive language does not stop after the mediation, there is a tremendous rain of bullets and a confusion of rifles until both sides are destroyed.”

It took a man of Cetta’s insight and stature to realize that, as the twenty-first century looms, The Canon of Leke Dukagjini may not be the most productive guide to personal conduct. In Kosova, Montenegro, and Macedonia, Cetta visited more than 1,500 families embroiled in feuds, showing sympathy to their predicament, but sternness in his demand: Blood feuds must end, for they were obstructing efforts to create an independent Albanian republic in what is now Yugoslavia.

In the past, when a blood feud was resolved, the guilty party would send a mutual friend to the other family to request forgiveness. When Cetta ended a blood feud, he never asked forgiveness in any individual’s name, but in the name of the Albanian nation.

After Cetta’s visit, blood feuds suddenly fell out of vogue in the Bronx. In the course of a week in July 1990, ten oaths of revenge were retracted, another 12 potential blood feuds quelled. Cetta and his entourage moved on to Detroit to counsel Albanians there.

Nikci remembers feeling nervous about attending local weddings, lest he get caught in the cross fire. Now he says that although not all blood feuds have ended, Albanians’ attitudes have changed: When neighbors are on the verge of violence, the name of Cetta is invoked, and everyone steps back from the brink and reevaluates his anger. “The only comparison I can make is to Gandhi,” Nikci says.

As fighting intensifies in Yugoslavia, the number of Albanian immigrants streaming into the Bronx is likely to increase. Here in a borough that the rest of the city has largely written off, Albanians will continue to flourish quietly—aware that it is the sometimes rigid constraints of Albanian culture that have enabled them to prosper here.

Even those outside the tribe must give the Albanians their due: Obstinate, chauvinistic, even occasionally violent, they may be. But if you’ve been to Pelham Parkway you know that they keep a nice neighborhood. And today in inner-city New York, that’s no small virtue.

John McCain picked up a big endorsement in New York City, where Albanians came to support him once again
By BEQIR SINA, New York
St. Regis Hotel, New York City— T he Albanian American Civic League, led by AACL President Joe DioGuardi, Balkan Affairs Adviser Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, and Civic League board members, including successful businessmen Agim Aliēkaj, Zef Balaj, David Balaj, Arslan Ēekaj, Vincent Saljanin, and Peter Saljanin, came to the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday, January 22, to support John McCain for President.

From right to left: Arslan Cekaj, Agim Alickaj, Senator John McCain, Joe DioGuardi, Zef Balaj, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, Fedor Miroshnichenko, and Andre Alishentsev

DioGuardi said that: "Here is a hero, a man with great experience in the national security of the United States because of what he has done as a naval commander and what he has done on the armed service committee in the Senate. Now he is running for President but the best reason to support him is that he is a man of character. He told the truth to the people of Michigan—that they are not going to get back their old jobs in the automobile industry—just as he told the truth to the people of South Carolina—that they are not going to get back their old jobs in the textile industry. But, he said that we have to go forward, to find people new jobs in technology and other fields that will make America grow and become better than it was before." said DioGuardi.
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain picked up a big endorsement in the city from New York Senator Alfonse D'Amato Tuesday. McCain and D'Amato appeared together at a news conference for the announcement before a fundraiser for McCain at the St. Regis in Midtown. "John McCain is a true national treasure, a true hero," said D'Amato.

"Last night I noticed that the Democratic candidates mentioned my name quite frequently. I'm always flattered to be mentioned in a Democratic debate," said McCain. "But it's pretty clear that they view me as a formidable opponent and I agree with them." Two polls released Monday showed McCain pulling ahead of Rudolph Giuliani in the former mayor's home state of New York. (Another poll released Tuesday showed the men in a virtual tie.)
John McCain’s 24-hour detour from Florida netted $1 million at this Manhattan fund raiser, his campaign said. McCain flew to New York from Fort Walton Beach and was scheduled to return later that evening to Orlando to continue campaigning in Florida for the Republican Primary on January 29.

In a special ceremony inside the U.S. Capitol on September 20, 2006, the Civic League gave their Sixth Annual Balkans Peace Award to Senators Schumer (D-NY) and John McCain (R-AZ) in honor of their historic support for Kosova’s independence and their introduction of S.Res. 521, a bill that “commends Albania for saving every Jew who lived in Albania or who sought asylum there during the Nazi Holocaust." Albanians also remember with pride that, in February 2000, then Presidential candidate and former POW Senator John McCain addressed a rally in Manhattan to demand the release of Kosova Albanian prisoners in Serbian jails.

http://www.empoweredclient.com/aacl/images/McCain_031.jpg
AACL Board members and supporters gather around Joe and Shirley DioGuardi at the end of the McCain for President event in New York.

DioGuardi talking to our newspaper :
“First, let me say how proud I am that so many Albanians came to support John McCain. And why is this important? Since 1998 when we had the problems with Milosevic, McCain has supported everything that we have asked him to do for the Albanian people, including to arm the KLA. We are Albanian Americans and need a leader that is going to make this country strong. Who is better than someone who has been in the House of Representatives and the Senate for over 30 years? He was a naval commander during Vietnam, and he was a Prisoner of War (POW) for six years. When the Communists found out his father was the head of the naval fleet in the pacific they wanted to release him immediately. He refused and said that he would only go when my turn comes. And when he bailed out of that jet at 600 miles per hour, he broke both his arms and both his legs and then had little medical help from his Communist captors.
“Now the U.S. economy is sinking, who is the one that has been yelling about the big spending? It’s been John McCain going after the Congressional leaders, even in his own party, for what they call the “earmarks.” This means spending big money for what you want in your district, but may not be good for America, like “the bridge to nowhere” in Alaska that was exposed by John McCain. So I will tell you that as Albanian Americans we need to support John McCain because he has done everything we have asked him to do for Kosova, starting from the beginning in supporting the KLA and now supporting Kosova’s independence. He gave a speech two years ago in Brussels to say that independence is the only answer.”
DioGuardi said further that:
“McCain is a great American, and Albanian Americans have to support someone who we can trust, who can tell the truth, who is ready to lead this nation, especially to solve the problems of national security in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was the first one to say let’s put more troops in Iraq for the surge. Now it’s working! He said that, ‘I would rather lose my race for the President than lose this war, because if we lose this war, then were going to see Al Qaeda back in the United States.’
“So I would tell you that Albanian Americans have every reason to support John McCain. I am proud that Albanians came out again tonight for Senator McCain. He knows who we are. In fact, the first thing that he said to me and Shirley when he came into the room at the St. Regis Hotel was ‘Joe, I saw your people in Michigan, and I saw them in South Carolina and New Hampshire.” Albanians are approaching McCain wherever he is and saying that they support him and are working with his friend, former Congressman Joe DioGuardi and his wife, Shirley Cloyes.’”

LQSHA fushatė pėr kandidatin republikan John McCain -- nga Beqir SINA, Nju Jork, SHBA

DioGuardi: John McCain, president, do tė bėnte mė shumė pėr Kosovėn e ēėshtjen shqiptare

Deri tani nė krye sipas shteteve janė Hillary Rodhman Clinton pėr partinė demokrate, dhe John McCain pėr repubikanėt. Shqiptaro amerikanėt, lobi shqiptar nė Amerikė, grupe me interesa tė caktuara shqiptarėsh kėtu, po pėrpiqen tė tėrheqin vėmendjen e kandidatėve pėr president, duke u bėrė nė shumė raste edhe ata pjesmarrės nė veprimtarit e tyre pėr tė grumbulluar (para)fonde pėr fushatėn zgjedhore tė kandidatėve qė ata kanė zgjedhur. Nė Nju Jork, dje, nė St. Regis Hotel & Resorts, u zhvillua njė darkė pėr tė mbėshtetur fushatėn e kandidatit republikan senatorit tė Arizonės John McCain. Nė darkė merrnin pjesė njė numėr politikanėsh tė njohur amerikanė si ish senatori i Nju Jorkut, Alfons DaMato dhe ish senatori Phill Graham.

Nė takimin e quajtur mbledhje parash(fundraising), mori pjesė edhe Presidenti vullnetar i Lidhjes Qytetare Xhoe DioGuardi (Joe DioGuardi), bashkėshortja e tij Shirli Klojes(Sherly Cloyes) Kėshilltare pėr Ēėshtjet Ballkanike, me njė grup shqiptaro-amerikanė, antar kėta nga bordi i Ligės Qytetare Shqiptaro Amerikane, z Agim Aliēkaj,Zef Balaj,David Balaj, Asllan Ēekaj,Vncent Saljanin e Peter Saljanin. "Ndjehem mjaft i nderuar dhe i befasur me tė vėrtetė, nga pėrkrahja qė shqiptaro-amerikanėt mė dhane mua, pėr zgjedhjet presidenciale nė pjesėn e parė, nė New Hampshire, Ohaio, Iova dhe North Carolina", citohet tė ketė thėnė kandidati republikan, senatori i Arizonės John McCain. Ndėrsa, DioGuardi, i cil po udhėheq nė krye tė Ligės Qyetare, njė fushat fondmbledhėse pėr McCain, thotė se:' Ne do t'a ndihmojmė tė bėhet presidenti i ardhshėm i Shteteve te Bashkuara, atė si njė mik i shqiptarėve dhe njė ndėr senatorėt mė aktivė tė Senatit amerikan, pėr ēėshtjet e shqiptareve. Ai theksoi se ndjen kėnaqėsi tė madhe nga qė nė disa shtete ka parė grupe shqiptarėsh nė fushatė. Diougardi, kujtoi kėrkesėn e fuqishme nė Senat, tė McCain pėr t'i dhėnė armė UĒK-sė, dhe se ai e mbėshteti presidentin Klinton, pėr tė ndėrhyrė nė mbrojtje tė shqiptareve nė vitin 1999.
http://www.empoweredclient.com/aacl/images/mccain_fushate1.jpg
Gazeta jone, e cila e po ndjek nga afėr kėtė fushat, edhe me kandidatėt e tjerė, nė fund tė kėtij takimi foli me DioGuardin.
Pyetjes sonė se pėrse Liga Qyetare, ka zgjedhur pikėrishtė John McCain?, DioGuardi i pėrgjigjet:"Kjo, ėshtė njė drejtė e jona, qė tė mbėshtėsim ose pėrkrahim njė kandidat, i cili mendojmė se ai ėshtė i afėrt me ne, dhe ne, e shohim si njė zė tė fuqishėm tė mbrojtjes dhe pėrkrahjes sė ēėshtjes shqiptare nė SHBA-sė. I tillė ėshtė dhe senatori i republikan i Arizonės, John McCain, kandidati pėr presidenti i ardhėshėm i SHBA-sė, dhe veterani e heroi i luftės sė Vietnamit. Ne jemi tė lumtur, qė sot me ne janė bashkuar, edhe shumė shqiptarė tė tjerė, dhe po japin kontributin e tyre nė kėtė fushat fondmbledhėse. Me McCain, ne kemi filluar lidhjet tona, perj vitit 1998, kur shqiptarėt e Kosovės nėn rregjimin e Millosheviqit, po u kanosej rreziku i ēfarrosjes dhe era e luftės po afronte. McCain, na mbėshteti nė dekleratat e tija dhe e ngriti zėrin nė senat duke thėnė se " E vetmja ndihmė qė mund t'ju japim shqiptarėve ėshtė - tė armatosim UĒK-ėn".

http://www.empoweredclient.com/aacl/images/mccain_fushate3.jpg
Mirpo, cilat janė arsyet? DioGuardi, thotė: "Pra, duke iu pėrgjigjur pyetjes suaj - ka shumė arsye argumente, tė cilat tregojnė se pėrse ne jemi vėnė me tė gjitha forcat tona financiare, dhe jemi duke e mbėshtetur nė fushat fondmbledhėse kandidatin republikan John McCain. Ne jemi shqiptaro amerikan qė kemi shumė gjėra tė pėrbashkėta me kėtė vend ku jetojmė - SHBA-sė, dhe dėshirojmė qė ky vend tė ketė njė lider qė t'a bėjė kėtė vend sa mė fort. Pra , 1- Ai ėshtė hero , 2- njeri me njė eksperiencė tė madhe pėr sigurinė kombėtare, kryetar i Komitetit tė Sigurisė Kombėtare nė Senat,3- ėshtė njeriu me karakter tė fort, 4- ėshtė njeriu qė ka mė shumė shanca tė bėhet president, pasi nė kohėn qė po flasim bashkė ai kryeson nė votimet partiake deri tani. Dhe e pesta qė ėshtė mė e rėndėsishmja ėshtė se presidenti i ardhėshėm, ėshtė edhe presidenti qė do tė forcojė edhe mė shumė lidhjet me shtetin mė tė ri , Kosovėn e pavarur e sovarane, me njė miqsi tė pėrherėshme me SHBA-sė.
http://www.empoweredclient.com/aacl/images/mccain_fushate4.jpg
Lidhur me ndarjen e shqiptarėve nė kėtė fushatė, DioGuardi ėshtė dakord , por thotė se: "Ne do ta mbėshtesim gjatė kėsaj fushate, ashtu si dhe forcat e tjera shqiptare qė kanė zgjedhur edhe ata lidere tyre qė besojnė se do tė bėhet president,John McCain, si senatori i parė qė fillojė tė mbėshteste Ushtrinė Ēlirimtare tė Kosovės. Dhe tani ėshtė ai qė mbėshtet dhe do tė njohi pavarėsinė e plotė tė Kosovės.McCain ka dekaluar para dy vjetėve nė Bruksel, se :"Pavarėsia e Kosovės, ėshtė e vetmja pėrgjigje, qė mund tė jepet pėr zgjidhjen e atij problemi" Ne po mbėshtesim njė njeri tek i cili ne besojmė, tek ai qė thotė tė vėrtetėn.John McCain , ka vlersuar sot ndihmėn qė shqiptarėt i kanė dhėnė atij nė Nju Hampshir, Ajova, dhe ne Karolinėn e Veriut. Ai ėshtė befasur qė ka parė kaq shumė shqiptarė tė cilėt po e mbėshtesin fushatėn e tij." thote Dioguardi. BS: Kush ėshtė ēelsi i mbėshtetjes ? Do tė kėrkojmė ngritjen ekonomike tė Kosovės, duke ndjekur njė strategji tė till qė ushtarėt tė cilėt do tė largohen nga Iraku, Korea e Jugut, Gjermania tė dėrgohen nė Kosovė, nė bazėn amerikane."

Hillary Clinton: Lidhje me Shqiptaret

Intervistė me znj.Klinton nga Ruben Avxhiu
NEW YORK

Ėshtė pasqyrim i rėndėsisė qė kanė pėr fatet e gjithė botės, zgjedhjet pėr postin ndoshta mė tė rėndėsishėm tė botės. Ndaj kjo intervistė ėshtė njė vlerėsim pėr rolin gjithnjė e mė tė dukshėm tė (http://blog.shekulli.com.al/2008/02/05/hillari-klinton-lidhjet-me-shqiptaret/#)komunitetit shqiptar nė SHBA, pėrfshi edhe nė betejėn mė tė rėndėsishme politike tė vendit e ndoshta edhe tė botės. Ndėrkohė qė marrėdhėniet e mira shqiptaro-amerikane nuk varen thelbėsisht nga kush udhėheq nė Shtėpinė e Bardhė, ėshtė pėr t’u vlerėsuar qė njė prej kandidatėve kryesorė tė kėtij viti, senatorja Klinton, ka njė njohje e afėrsi kaq tė madhe me ēėshtjet qė shqetėsojnė shqiptarėt dhe shpreh besim te roli qė mund luajnė ata nė kutitė e votimit kėtu nė SHBA.

Senatorja Hillari Klinton, urime pėr suksesin tuaj tė fundit nė Florida. Po e filloj pikėrisht me kėtė. A do kenė vlerė votat e Florida-s dhe Michigan-it?

Demokratėt e kėtyre shteteve janė pėrjashtuar nga konventa pėr ndryshimin e datės sė votimeve pa lejen e partisė…
Vazhdimisht dėgjoj nga njerėzit nė Florida dhe Michigan, qė kėrkojnė qė edhe zėrat e tyre tė dėgjohen pėr tė zgjedhur kandidatin demokrat. Unė besoj se kandidati ynė, kushdo qė tė zgjidhet, do tė ketė nevojė pėr mbėshtetjen entuziaste edhe tė demokratėve nė kėto shtete, pėr tė fituar zgjedhjet e pėrgjithshme. Prandaj edhe unė do t’u kėrkoj delegatėve tė mi nė Konventėn Demokratike qė tė mbėshtesin ftimin e delegacioneve nga Florida dhe Michigan. E di qė jo tė gjithė delegatėt e mi do tė bien dakord dhe unė do tė mbėshtes plotėsisht vendimin e tyre, sido qė tė jetė.

Shumėkush ėshtė i mendimit se nė kėtė drejtim ju ia kaloni rivalit tuaj brenda partisė. Sa e pėrgatitur ndjeheni pėr t’u pėrballur me sfidat ndėrkombėtare, nė detyrėn e Presidentit tė Shteteve tė Bashkuara tė Amerikės?

Nė kėto kohėra sfidash tė mėdha anembanė botės, Amerika ka nevojė pėr njė udhėheqės tė fortė e me pėrvojė, qė do ta kthejė pa mėdyshje nė rrugėn e sigurisė, mundėsisė dhe begatisė pėr tė gjithė.
Unė jam ai udhėheqės. Unė do tė jem njė Komandante e Pėrgjithshme e vendosur dhe efektive pėr vendin tonė.

Me sfidat e paprecedenta qė presin Presidentin e ardhshėm tė kėtij vendi, ėshtė e nevojshme qė tė kemi njė Komandant tė Pėrgjithshėm tė sprovuar me arritje tė bazuara nė fakte. E kaluara ime dėshmon jo vetėm pėr atė qė kam arritur gjatė 35 viteve shėrbimi publik, por edhe ēfarė jam nė gjendje tė arrij edhe nė tė ardhmen, pėr vendin tim.

Dy ēėshtje ndėrkombėtare shqetėsojnė nė kėtė pranverė shqiptarėt: Pavarėsimi i Kosovės dhe fitimi i Shqipėrisė pėr tė hyrė nė NATO. Ka forca qė pėrpiqen t’i vonojnė tė dyja kėto procese. Po ju pyes fillimisht pėr pozicionin tuaj pėr Kosovėn…

Pėrkushtimi im i hershėm pėr Shqipėrinė dhe Kosovėn dhe pėrpjekjet pėr to, janė tė njohura mirė.

Gjatė luftės sė Kosovės, unė jam deklaruar me forcė dhe nė mėnyrė tė pėrsėritur kundėr brutalitetit tė regjimit tė Millosheviēit dhe politikės sė spastrimit etnik. Nė vizitat e mia tė shpeshta nė Ballkan, kam parė me sytė e mi tmerret dhe vuajtjet qė i janė imponuar kėtij rajoni vital.

Gjatė kėsaj kohe, u miqėsova me shumė aktivistė kosovarė tė tė drejtave tė njeriut, duke bashkėpunuar ngushtė me ta, pėr tė ndihmuar nė lehtėsimin e vuajtjes sė popullit tė Kosovės.

Serbia ėshtė sigurisht njė vend kyē nė rajon dhe unė e mirėpres bashkėpunimin me udhėheqėsit demokratikė tė Beogradit, pėr integrimin e saj nė komunitetin tonė perėndimor.

Faleminderit zonja Senatore. Njė vonesė po kėrkohet nga disa zėra edhe pėr hyrjen e Shqipėrisė nė NATO. Ēfarė pozicioni keni ju pėr zgjerimin e aleancės dhe ambicien e Shqipėrisė pėr t’u anėtarėsuar? Shqipėria ėshtė prej vitesh nė Irak e nė Afganistan, ku disa aleatė tė tjerė mungojnė…

Vizioni im ėshtė njė Europė nė paqe, e qėndrueshme dhe e sigurt dhe me Ballkanin, pra pėrfshi edhe Shqipėrinė tė anėtarėsuar nė NATO dhe tė integruar tėrėsisht nė njė radhė institucionesh Euro-Atlantike. Si demokracitė e tjera tė reja qė janė anėtarėsuar nė NATO nė vitet e fundit, edhe Shqipėria duhet tė bėhet pjesė e kėsaj aleance tė rėndėsishme.

Sfida qė qėndron pėrpara nesh qė e admirojmė Shqipėrinė dhe pėrpjekjet e mėdha qė ka bėrė qė kur la pas tė kaluarėn e saj tė tmerrshme autoritariste, ėshtė qė tė sigurojmė qė Shqipėria tė pėrmbushė standardet e anėtarėsisė nė NATO, nė mėnyrė qė tė kontribuojė sa mė mirė vlerave dhe sigurisė sonė tė pėrbashkėt.

Do tė punoj pėr kėtė si presidente.

Si do ju shėrbejė nėse zgjidheni Presidente?

Unė ndihem krenare pėr tė 35 vitet e kaluar nė shėrbimin publik, pėrfshi edhe periudhėn nė Senat. Kam pasur privilegjin qė tė pėrfaqėsoj popullin e Neė York-ut dhe pėr tė ndihmuar njerėzit e gjithė vendit nėpėrmjet punės sime nė Senat.

Jam veēanėrisht krenare qė kam propozuar Aktin e Fondit Kosovaro-Amerikan pėr Ndėrmarrje nė vitin 2003, me synimin pėr t’i ndihmuar rritjes sė biznesit tė vogėl, sigurimit tė mikro-kredive, ndėrtimit tė shtėpive dhe rindėrtimit tė vendit nė Kosovė. Gjithashtu, kam propozuar nė maj tė vitit 2005, njė rezolutė nė Senat qė i kėrkonte Shqipėrisė qė tė mbante zgjedhje tė lira dhe tė ndershme nė zgjedhjet parlamentare tė atij viti.

Kur tė bėhem presidente, do tė mbėshtetem nė punėn qė kam bėrė nė Senat, si dhe nė atė qė kam bėrė gjatė gjithė jetės sime pėr tė pėrmirėsuar jetėn e fėmijėve dhe familjeve anembanė kėtij vendi.

Ju falėnderoj pėr intervistėn zonja Senatore dhe ju uroj suksese nė fushatėn tuaj. Mesazhi juaj mund tė nxisė shqiptaro-amerikanėt demokratė qė janė me ju, qė tė mos mungojnė pėr tė dalė e pėr tė votuar nė atė qė njihet si Super e Marta kėtu nė SHBA…

Kėto zgjedhje janė shumė tė rėndėsishme pėr tė ardhmen dhe unė shpresoj se tė gjithė amerikanėt do tė ushtrojnė tė drejtėn e tyre pėr tė votuar.

Engel: Kam qenė dhe do tė jem gjithmonė nė krah tė Kosovės

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/vajzgrudet_2008/engel-small.gif

18-02-2008

Ndėr tė parėt qė pėrshėndetėn pavarėsinė nė Shtetet e Bashkuara, ishte anėtari i Kongresit Elliot Engel.
Nė njoftimin e zyrės sė zotit Engel, pėrmendet fakti qė ai ishte nė krye tė njė grupi anėtarėsh me peshė tė Dhomės sė Pėrfaqėsuesve, qė i shkruan Presidentit Bush nė mbėshtetje tė njohjes sė pavarėsisė sė Kosovės.
Kur tė mblidhet kongresi mė 25 shkurt, anėtari i Kongresit Engel do tė paraqesė njė rezolutė pėr tė uruar Kosovėn pėr pavarėsinė.//kk//

Kandidatėt presidencialė demokratė, Klinton dhe Obama, deklarata pėr pavarėsinė e Kosovės

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj8/vajzgrudet_2008/ap_Hillary_Clinton_Barack_Obama_05f.jpg

18-02-2008

Nė deklaratėn, zonja Klinton lė tė kuptohet se integrimi i plotė i Ballkanit Perėndimor nė Evropė dhe nė komunitetin euro-atlantik do tė jetė pėrparėsi e saj, nėse zgjidhet presidente.
//kk//

Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, Celebrations in Times Square

February 17, 2008

From CNN.com:

Kosovo has formally declared its independence from Serbia and become the world’s newest state in a move opposed by Serbia and Russia but backed by many western governments.
Kosovo has been under U.N. supervision and patrolled by a NATO-led peacekeeping force since the end of the three-month war (in 1999), in which NATO warplanes pounded Serbia to roll back a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” of the province’s Albanian population under former President Slobodan Milosevic.

The disputed province is dear to the Serbs — Orthodox Christians who regard it as Serbian territory. But it is equally coveted by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians — Muslims who have a 90 percent majority. Two years of talks on its final status ended in failure last December.
Read the full, official story here. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/02/17/kosovo.independence/?iref=hpmostpop)

Revelers did laps around midtown Manhattan earlier today in celebration of Kosovo’s declared independence which came late last night.
Cars passed blaring their horns, people hung out of the windows and stood up through the sun roofs waving flags and t-shirts — many had taped the Kosovo flag on their car bonnets. Some held up placards which read “Thank You America.”

Perkrahja me e madh qe i behet Kandidatit Republikan, John McCain, me shume ka te bej me faktin, se ky eshte nder kandidatet qe njeh me mire ceshtjen Shqiptare, dhe njihet edhe si mbeshtetes i kahmotshem i Pavaresise se Kosoves.

Eshte e drejte e jotja.
