Authorities said Elisabeth Fritzl, now aged 42, and her traumatised family met at a clinic where they are getting psychiatric treatment and counselling.
Clinic director Berthold Kepplinger said: "It was astonishing how easy it was - how the mother and grandmother came together."
He said the family interacted very naturally, even though three children who lived with their grandparents upstairs never met their siblings in their windowless cell.
